I’ve irrational loyalty towards Gary. It was nice enough that he was acknowledged by the Academy at all. He’s fine without the validation of an out of touch, self congratulatory circle-jerk.
As worthless and banal as I regard the Oscars, it’s fitting that Jean won for a role that was essentially a love letter to the golden age of Hollywood.
Also the win was a delicious bitch-slap in the face of Hollywood’s beige monopoly (Clooney, Pitt, ‘insert unremarkable forgettable white guy here’)
